“Oscar Aguilar, a 21 year-old from Mexico City, accidentally shot himself in the head while posing for a gun selfie Aug. 3, apparently police reports indicate he had also been under the influence of alcohol.
The young man’s selfie obsession to snap impressive photos, also led to his death. According to reports, after a night on the town with friends Aguilar decided to grab a loaded gun and tried to snap several selfies, but while trying for that perfect photo Aguilar accidentally killed himself during the gun selfie, shooting himself in the head. A neighbor described to reporters that they heard the gunfire, then immediately heard a person screaming and called the police as fast as possible. Although he was rushed to the hospital he was pronounced dead in route. Moments after the story appeared online an unknown creator published a Oscar Aguilar community Facebook Page.
This isn’t the first time that someone has killed themselves trying to take a selfie.
On June 12, 2014, a teenage girl was on a school trip in Taranto, Italy, and fell to her death while trying to snap a selfie. She fell 60 feet and landed on jagged rocks, doctors said her injuries were so severe they couldn’t save her. According to GulfNews.com, a student accidentally killed herself while attempting to take a selfie with a friend. The girl lost her balance and fell down several flights of stairs sustaining severe head and bodily injuries which led to her death. Maybe selfie safety campaigns are needed, since some people are killing themselves during selfies. Reported April 27, a 32-year-old woman was driving along a US highway and snapped a selfie that led to her death. Police said at 8:34 a.m. they received a call about a vehicle accident, and after discovering the victims name, Courtney Sanford, they were able to find out she had died taking a selfie, which was posted at 8:33 a.m.
Even experts have warned selfie obsessed people need to understand they can kill themselves and others while taking selfies. Robert Sinclair of AAA believes this is just another craze that is keeping people from the real task at hand, driving. “It’s usually mental distraction that is the worst.” Which is what appears to be part of the latest deadly gun selfie accident, it was reported that Aguilar had been drinking, maybe his mind was impaired, which is why he accidentally shot himself during a gun selfie. Selfies kill if people don’t think safety first.”
